Our man on the (e) street down in the swamps reports

I suppose I could have included a few more references in the title but, hey, when you've written as many quality lyrics as The Boss it is easy to get carried away.

Our man on the street in New Jersey, umpy, had this to say about last night. Have no fear, he'll be there again tonight, then in Ottawa, then Chicago, then...

Take it away Umpy.

...the Swaplands of New Jersey.

After a day of travel on Monday, I finally got to see Bruce perform last night at the Continental Airlines Arena.

We started our day early by arriving at the arena at 2:30 pm. It was a good day for stalking; not too hot and not too cold. We saw all the band members and Bruce arrive. Unfortunately autographs were not signed as they drove right into the arena.

We tailgated for a few hours and then it was off to the show.

I won't bore you with the details of the setlist as you can read that over the web.

Some notes and highlights from the show include:

- The sound in the arena was very good.

- Bruce and the band had good energy. I cannot say the same for the crowd.
I thought that the crowd was lacking in energy.

- The GA area is packed with very little room to move.

- Compared to past tours, Bruce does very little talking. He goes from one song to the next without any interruption. This helps to keep up the momentum of the show.

- Stevie was late starting No Surrender. His Bandana came loose after Radio Nowhere (it almost fell off) and he had to go off to the side of the stage in order to retie it.

- Max's drum kit is tilted to the left. I wonder if this is because of his past back issues. Tilting it could make it easier for him to watch Bruce.

- Roy had problems with his electric piano all night. In fact, they were unable to play "A Town Called Heartbreak" as Roy couldn't play the intro. Brilliant Disguise was played as audible instead.

- The 3 pack of Reason to Believe, Candy's Room and She's the One is the highlight of the show.

- Bruce cued in Clarence twice during Darlington County. Clarence missed both cues which caused Bruce to chuckle. Clarence picked up on the cue the third time.

- An either/or of Backstreets or Incident on 57th Street was on the setlist. Neither were played. Darkness on the Edge of Town was played in its spot.

- I am told the Danny's face looks like a face of someone who has had chemo.
Clarence appears to be dragging his left leg at times.

- American Land sounds great with the band. It is a great song to end the show.

All in all this was a strong show for so early in the tour. We're hoping that Bruce shakes up the setlist tonight.
