There have been a number of posts on Backstreets lately around the subject of Mellencamp, Springsteen and Seger as blue collar singers. While I agree with this post that Mellencamp is no Springsteen (a good thing) I also agree that both he and Bob Seger round out the working man's view in music.
I'm not quite sure what Mellencamp is doing these days, following in the footstep of Seger in commercial anthems that's for sure (My Country plays on a US truck commercial showing the great American landscape in the US and the SAME thing is done in Canada but showcasing the Canadian landscape -- never knew Canada was Mellencamp's country...), but his music is watered down musically and lyrically. I used to buy his records and enjoy almost every song on them, now there seems to be one or two catchy tunes and the rest is crap.
Just to put everyone's mind at ease, Springsteen, when compared to these other two, is still the boss:
